A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
